A Brief Account of Treatment for Tinnitus

Tinnitus is a low ringing, whistling, or cricketing noise in one or both ears even though there is no external source of any audible sound anywhere. The other sounds may include buzzing, clicking, humming, roaring, and hissing. Tinnitus may be continuous in some, while in some it may be occasional. Depending on the gravity, the sound may vary from low pitch to high pitch and may occur in one or both ears.

Even though tinnitus may not seem bothersome, it can be quite irritating, disturb sleep, and cause stress.

Treatment of tinnitus

Before we discuss tinnitus treatment, let us check what causes tinnitus:

Tinnitus Causes:

Tinnitus is mainly caused due to hearing loss, medication, blockage in the ear canal or infection in the ear, injury in the neck or head, Meniere's disease, a disorder in blood vessels, Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, dysfunctional Eustachian tube, stiffening or other physical changes of middle ear bones, inner ear muscular spasms, Acoustic neuroma or various other tumours in head and neck, and other chronic conditions.

The Treatment: The tinnitus or ringing in the ears treatment depends on the underlying cause that is resulting in the phenomenon. Nevertheless, the common treatments include:

Removal of earwax:

Removal of earwax blockage decreases the symptoms significantly.

Treating the condition of blood vessels:

The underlying conditions of the blood vessel may need medication and even surgery or other treatments to address tinnitus and eradicate it.

Use of hearing aids:

If tinnitus is due to age-related hearing loss or hearing loss due to other reasons, the use of hearing aid will reduce the symptoms.

Changing the medication:

If it is due to the side effect of a particular medication, changing it will help.

Besides, noise suppression treatment comes in handy in managing tinnitus. It is done with the use of white noise machines and various masking devices that are similar to hearing aids.

Thus you see, there are various treatment procedures, and it depends upon the cause behind the problem, which varies from person to person.

If you or someone you know is suffering from tinnitus, the first step is to visit an independent audiologist near you for a tinnitus test.
